Help us produce Las Azurduy [las-ah-soor-doo-ee]: a story inspired by the life of badass Latin-American independence fighter Juana Azurduy, a three-woman play in Spanish, Quechua, and Aymara (with English supertitles) performed in a World Premiere in San Francisco’s Mission district.

Ayúdanos a realizar Las Azurduy: una historia inspirada en la vida de la ruda luchadora por la independencia latinoamericana Juana Azurduy, como una obra de teatro de tres mujeres en español, quechua y aymara (con supertítulos en inglés) presentada en un estreno mundial en el distrito de la Misión de San Francisco.
Synopsis
Las Azurduy is an original play commissioned to Argentinian playwright Florencia Aroldi about Juana Azurduy, a hero of Latin America’s wars of independence against the Spanish crown, a mixed-race woman of Indigenous descent who is only recently receiving her dues in the history books. This play is also an excuse to reflect on the invisibility of female work, on our silenced voices, and our erased faces. Juana Azurduy embodied the resilience and spirit of Latin American women, as well as the mix of cultural and ancestral heritage that typifies the American experience. Today La Lengua clamors her name out loud for all to remember, and in Florencia Aroldi’s tour-de-force new play, it takes three performers to embody Azurduy’s complex and indomitable spirit – hence “Las Azurduy.” This project involves an all- Latinx female ensemble, playwriting, and creative team.

Las Azurduy es una obra de teatro original comisionada a la dramaturga argentina Florencia Aroldi sobre Juana Azurduy, una heroína de las guerras de independencia de América Latina contra la corona española, una mujer mestiza de ascendencia indígena que recientemente está recibiendo su cuota en los libros de historia. La obra es también una excusa para reflexionar sobre la invisibilidad del trabajo femenino, sobre nuestras voces silenciadas y sobre nuestros rostros borrados. Juana Azurduy encarnó la resiliencia y el espíritu de las mujeres latinoamericanas, así como la mezcla de herencia cultural y ancestral que caracteriza la experiencia americana. Hoy, La Lengua clama su nombre en voz alta para que todos la recuerden, y en la obra nueva y prodigiosa de Florencia Aroldi, se necesitan tres intérpretes para encarnar el espíritu complejo e indomable de Azurduy, de ahí “Las Azurduy”. Este proyecto involucra un ensemble femenino, dramaturga y equipo creativo latinos.

The story so far…
La Lengua commissioned this play and it was first presented and directed by Rosa Navarrete as an experimental, in-person staged reading at Brava Theater in San Francisco (November 2021), with English/Spanish supertitles. A fully-staged production of the play (in Spanish, Quechua, and Aymara) will be presented at Brava in August 2022, directed by Eugenia Arbol, and featuring Carla Gallardo, Deborah Cortez, and Virginia Blanco. We seek your support to help fund this production, to bring this story to life as it deserves, and to make sure the voices of Latinx artists are heard when so many forces converge to suppress it.

La Lengua encargó esta obra y se presentó por primera vez bajo la dirección de Rosa Navarrete como una lectura escenificada experimental en persona en el Teatro Brava de San Francisco (noviembre de 2021), con supertítulos en inglés/español. En agosto de 2022 se presentará en Brava una producción total de la obra (en español, quechua y aymara), dirigida por Eugenia Arbol y con un ensemble integrado por Carla Gallardo, Deborah Cortez y Virginia Blanco. Buscamos tu apoyo para poder financiar esta producción, darle vida a esta historia como se merece, y para asegurarnos de que la voz de los artistas latinos se escuche cuando tantas fuerzas convergen para reprimirla.
La Lengua: our mission and its challenges
La Lengua’s mission is to tear down cultural walls by telling silenced stories and boldly advocating for linguistic diversity. We present original or rarely-seen plays in their original Spanish, and use technology to embed or project live English supertitles, making the work available to larger audiences. Producing Spanish-speaking theater in the US is a revolutionary gesture. It is a tool to amplify Latin American culture, a space for resistance, a place to speak and to create on our own terms, but also a place to build bridges and to share our cultural identity with pride, and with a critical eye.
As a Latina female-lead emergent theater company, we are extremely grateful for the support we have received to date, from our audiences, from our donors, and from a TBA CA$H Performs grant in 2020 and a Fleishhacker Foundation grant in 2021. Since our launch in 2019, these funds have enabled us to present seven semi-montaged staged readings (two in-person and five on Zoom), and two audio dramas. We always pay every single one of our artists – not as much as we’d like to be, but we know it’s essential for everyone’s work to be valued and sustainable.
As we embark on this new ambitious venture, we need your support. The funds we gather will go towards the substantial budget such a project entails: renting rehearsal and performance space (Brava’s Cabaret in the heart of the Mission district in San Francisco), the commission of an original play, stipends for actors, director, stage manager, (set, sound, and light) designers, stage builders, sound and light operators, subtitle translation, projection operator, graphic designer, music composer, etc.
La Lengua: nuestra misión y sus desafíos
La misión de La Lengua es derribar muros culturales contando historias silenciadas y promoviendo con tesón la diversidad lingüística. Presentamos obras contemporáneas originales o poco vistas en su español original y utilizamos tecnología para insertar o proyectar supertítulos en inglés en vivo, poniendo el trabajo a disposición de un público más amplio. Producir teatro de habla hispana en Estados Unidos es un gesto revolucionario. Es una herramienta para difundir la cultura latinoamericana, un espacio de resistencia, un lugar para hablar y crear en nuestros propios términos, pero también un lugar para tender puentes y compartir nuestra identidad cultural con orgullo y con ojo crítico. Como compañía de teatro emergente liderada por mujeres latinas, estamos muy agradecides por el apoyo que hemos recibido de nuestro público, nuestros donantes, y también de las subvenciones TBA CA$H Performs en 2020, y de la Fundación Fleishhacker en 2021. Desde nuestro lanzamiento en 2019, estos fondos nos han permitido presentar siete performances semi-montadas de teatro leído (dos en persona y cinco en Zoom) y dos radioteatros. Siempre pagamos a cada uno de nuestros artistas, no tanto como nos gustaría, pero sabemos que es esencial que el trabajo de todos sea valorado y sostenible. Créditos regionales como actriz incluyen (Ex Ubuntu) Oakland Theater Project, Shelton Theatre, TheatreFirst, y The Cutting Ball Theater, como también varias puestas de teatro leído con Brava Studio Sessions y 3 Girls Theatre. Recientemente fue Catita en la versión audio drama de A Solid Home (Un hogar sólido) en MACT Mexican American Conservatory Theatre, Paulina en la lectura escenificada virtual de La Muerte y la Doncella, y Nora St. John en el radioteatro Adiós Robinson en La Lengua Teatro en Español. Localmente, Virginia ha estudiado arte dramático en Studio ACT, BerkREP Theatre School, y Shakespeare & Co. Fue nominada por BroadwayWorld SF a Mejor Actriz Protagónica en una Obra por el papel de Young Woman en Knives in Hens (Cuchillos en Gallinas) en Anton’s Well Theatre Company (2019). Regional credits include Orinda Starlight Village Players, Oakland Theater Project (Ex Ubuntu), Shelton Theatre, TheatreFirst, Theatre of Yugen, and Cutting Ball Theater, along with several staged readings with Brava Studio Sessions and 3 Girls Theatre. She was Catita in the radio play A Solid Home at MACT Mexican American Conservatory Theatre, Paulina in the live-streaming of La Muerte y la Doncella (Death and the Maiden), and Nora St. John in the radio play Adiós Robinson at La Lengua. Her local acting training is from Studio ACT, Berkeley REP Theatre School, and Shakespeare & Company. Virginia was nominated by BroadwayWorld SF for Best Leading Actress in a Play for the role of Young Woman in Knives in Hens at Anton's Well Theater Company (2019). She studied Communications at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) and has worked as a journalist and editor for several written media platforms. She is the founding Artistic Director of La Lengua Teatro, an artist in residence at Brava Theater, and she was recently granted a 2021-2022 TBA Arts Leadership residency to be mentored by AlterTheater. Es una inmigrante y narradora peruana criada en Los Ángeles. Escribe, actúa y dirige en el sur de California y trabaja en películas independientes y proyectos de teatro. Rosa dirigió recientemente ‘Feliz - An American Play’ escrita por Michael J. Mejia, como su primera producción híbrida cinemática/ zoom/ teatro a través de The Wayward Artist. Su obra corta ‘Chabuca, Susana, Mami & Me’ fue parte del Festival Virtual Play ‘Chicanas, Cholas y Chisme 2021’, y es cocreadora de una serie independiente titulada ‘ELLAY’ que irá a festivales a finales de este año. En 2020, Rosa formó parte de la cohorte inaugural del Laboratorio de escritura de guiones de ciencia ficción de autores negros, indígenas y de color con ‘Justice for my Sister’ (www.justiceformysister.com). She is a Peruvian immigrant and storyteller raised in Los Angeles. She writes, acts, and directs in SoCal and works on independent films and theater projects. Rosa recently directed Feliz - An American Play written by Michael J. Mejia, as her first cinematic/ zoom/ theater hybrid production via The Wayward Artist. Her short play Chabuca, Susana, Mami & Me was part of the 2021 Chicanas, Cholas, y Chisme Virtual Play Festival, and she’s a Co-creator of an independent series titled ELLAY that will be going to festivals later this year. In 2020, Rosa was part of the inaugural cohort for the Black, Indigenous, People of Color Sci-Fi Screenwriting Lab with Justice for my Sister (www.justiceformysister.com). Debutó en las tablas con Peter Pan El Musical como el ama del barco del capitán Hook. Deborah es actriz, cantante, productora y directora en el Área de la Bahía. Ha trabajado en varias obras teatrales, películas y comerciales. Algunos de sus trabajos teatrales son Josefa (Convoy 31000), Lucy (Strange Ladies), Theseus (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Olivia (Twelfth Night), Jean (Dead Man Cell Phone) y muchos más. Créditos de películas y cortometrajes son: No Quiero Verte, One Long Day, Drops of Sunshine, Drunk Theatre, entre otros. También fue la voz oficial y la narradora de nuestros radioteatros (Adiós Robinson, El Beso de la Mujer Araña). Things are moving fast. After years of dreaming about this project, and then a couple of years of development (research, conversations, commission, experimental staged reading, applying for grants, and …crowdfunding!), this week we start working in person on our world premiere. We have an Aymara voice recording session with our team in Argentina tomorrow, and our promotional photoshoot on Thursday!
